I had my first cold sore outbreak when I was in High School.I remember asking my mom what in the heck that was on my lip and she vaguely responded: “Oh that, that’s just a fever blister.It will go away in a few days.”
At the time I didn’t know how many problems and issues that “fever blister” would cause me later in life.If I had only known.
After going through a tour in the Army and making my way through college, I realized that this problem just wasn’t going away. I was having too many outbreaks!
While in college, I forced myself to visit a Doctor, only to find out that I had the virus that causes cold sores: HSV1 or Herpes Simplex Virus 1.
What Do You Mean, There’s No Cure?
I asked the Doctor how do we cure it.He looked at me and smiled.What he said sent my heart down to my stomach.“We can’t cure it son, once you got it, you will always have it.All we can do is treat the symptoms as you have each outbreak.”
To say that I was puzzled and devastated is an understatement.I didn’t know what to do next.The Doctor quickly gave me the diagnosis, handed me an expensive prescription, wished me luck and left the room.
I had so many questions and concerns.I found myself in this fight alone.I knew that I was tired of having these outbreaks and that something had to be done.
Fast forward to Medical School
where I was studying to become a Physician Assistant, I was determined to find answers.

When Bad Gets Worse…
One day during a lecture in class we were discussing the topic of cold sores.As fate would have it, I was suffering with an outbreak at the time.I know, poor me right?
As the speaker was describing to my class the clinical presentations of a cold sore outbreak, one of my least favorite classmates yelled out: “You mean like the one that Dave has right now?”
The speaker, embarrassed for me, kinda lowered his head and said, “yeah, like that” Needless to say I could have gone under my desk at the time.And as you can imagine, I did have a few choice words for my classmate too.
The Best Day Ever!
I remember it like it was yesterday.I had finally done it.I had finally discovered the mother of all remedies.My research had paid off.
